Das Goldene Zeitalter (Was ist ein Museum? 12)

Germain Bazin, Chefkurator der Gemäldesammlung des Louvre, hat 1967 eine Museumsgeschichte (The Museum Age) veröffentlicht, die seiner Profession entsprechend ihren Schwerpunkt auf der Geschichte des - europäischen und US-Amerikanischen - Kunstmuseums hat. Das Kapitel zum 19. Jahrhundert trägt den Titel "Goldenes Zeitalter".
Man glaubt ihn zu verstehen als passende Bezeichnung für die Durchsetzung und Ausbreitung einer Idee, ihre Universalisierung im globalen Maßstab und ihre (typologische) Differenzierung über das Jahrhundert hinweg. Das 19. wäre also das Jahrhundert, in dem sich das Museum als wichtige kulturelle Institution weltweit durchsetzt und das 'europäische Modell' vorbildlich wird.
Bazin meint es aber anders. Er bezieht sich auf das museale Sammeln. Er schwelgt in den Freiheiten, die das bürgerliche Zeitalter in einer Art von ursprünglicher Akkumulation der Kulturgüter noch gewährt habe. Sammlungen konnten nahezu beliebig aufgebaut, erweitert, ergänzt werden. Alles schien noch verfügbar, leistbar, erreichbar. Grabungskampagnen, militärische Operationen - das Modell gab Napoleons Feldzug in Ägypten ab -, die Entstehung eines Marktes für 'Museumsstücke', die Ausnutzung ungleicher Machtverhältnisse, die Kolonisierung - das alles ermöglichte eine nahezu grenzenlose Sammeltätigkeit. Museen mussten sich nicht einmal auf den 'Markt' begeben, sondern konnten, etwa in Ägypten, bei Agenten und Händlern gezielt, in der Sammlung 'fehlende' Objekte für eine bestellen - und es wurde geliefert.
Grabanlagen, Schatzfunde, ja ganze Tempel oder Altäre, monumentale Bauten und Ensembles von Kunstwerken, wanderten in die großen Museen europäischer Nationalstaaten. Diese konkurrierten untereinander auch mit ihren Museen und Sammlungen und das Sammlungsgut wurde, woher es auch kam, zum 'Nationalgut', das den Stolz und das Ansehen einer Nation mehrte. Das British Museum wird mit den Elgin Marbles zu dem Museum, als das wir es heute noch sehen und Berlin wird, erst Jahrzehnte später, mit dem Pergamonaltar ein Objekt besitzen, das einigermaßen der Londoner Metropole ebenbürtig macht.
„Von besonderer Bedeutung ist es", schreibt der Preußische Kultusminister an den König, "daß die Sammlungen der Museen, welche bisher sehr arm an griechischen Originalwerken waren […] nunmehr in den Besitz eines Werkes griechischer Kunst von der Ausdehnung gelangen, welche etwa nur in der Reihe der attischen und kleinasiatischen Skulpturen des Britischen Museums gleich oder nahe kommen.“
Die wirtschaftlich, politisch und militärisch überlegenen Staaten bedienten sich in jenen Regionen, in denen es weder eine nennenswerte Museumskultur, Denkmalpflege oder das - moderne - Bewußtsein für die Bedeutung des kulturellen Erbes gab. Unklare politische Verhältnisse, mangelnde rechtliche Regelungen, informelle Deals mit lokalen Behörden und Händlern, das Fehlen für ein Bewusstsein für den ästhetischen oder geschichtlichen Wert der eigenen kulturellen Überlieferung, das sind die Bedingungen, unter denen der Massentransfer in die Museen der großen europäischen Nationalstaaten vor sich gehen konnte.
Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts war Europa von diesem Mechanismus selbst betroffen. Mit der Macht des privaten Kapitals wurden ungeheure Mengen und Qualitäten europäischer Kultur in die USA transferiert um dort weltweit 'konkurrenzfähige' Museen schaffen. Das Metropolitan Museum steigt in wenigen Jahrzehnten vom viertklassigen Stadtmuseum zu einem der bis heute weltweit bedeutendsten Museum auf. Noch in den 30er-Jahren wird der Gründungsdirektor des Museum of Modern Art, Alfred Barr, die ökonomische Überlegenheit der Vereinigten Staaten nutzen, um in Deutschland und der UdSSR, die sich in in einer depressiven wirtschaftlichen Situation befinden, die Grundlage für eine der bedeutendsten Sammlungen Moderner Kunst weltweit zu legen.
Mit einer Unbedarftheit, die heute (angesichts der Raubkunstdebatten) undenkbar wäre, feierte Bazin in seinem in den 60ern erschienenen Buch diesen Zustand als ein Eldorado der Sammler und der Museen. Er hält sich mit keinen moralischen und kulturgeschichtlichen Überlegungen auf. Als leitender Mitarbeiter des Louvre mußte er freilich wissen, daß dieses Museum, und gerade die ihm anvertraute Gemäldesammlung, umfassend auf gewaltförmiger und rechtsbrüchiger Grundlage entstanden war. Heute wäre eine solche Sichtweise nicht mehr zu vertreten. Die seit Jahren geführten Debatten um Arisierung, Raubkunst und Provenienzforschung haben die Politik und die Museen wie auch eine breitere Öffentlichkeit sensibilisiert.
Gewaltförmige Akkumulation ist aber nur eine Seite der gewaltigen 'Museumssammlung' des 'Goldenen Zeitalters'. Die zweite große Triebfeder ist die von Hermann Lübbe und anderen unter dem Stichwort Musealisierung beschriebene Dialektik. Der beschleunigte Wandel aller Lebensverhältnisse, das immer raschere Verschwinden von immer mehr materieller 'Umwelt' und Tradition, rief den Wunsch des Bewahrend hervor. Daß diese Bewegung nicht bloß konservierend verlief war dem gleichzeitigen Entstehen eines 'historischen Sinns' geschuldet, dem das Museum des Historismus aber auch die Geisteswissenschaften ihre soziale und geschichtliche Grundlage verdanken (J. Ritter). Musealisierung ist in erster Linie eine Art der Bewahrung, Erhaltung, Konservierung, aber ohne Formen der Aneignung würde das bloß zur Schaffung eines toten Gedächtnisses führen.
Ohne die Haussmanisierung von Paris hätte der Architekt und Denkmalpfleger Violett le Duc nicht sein (inzwischen aufgelassenes und transformiertes) Musée des Monuments gründen können, ohne die die Stadt tiefgreifende Veränderung Wiens durch den Bau der Ringstraße und die Erweiterung der Stadt, hätte es nicht jenen 'Reliktanfall' gegeben, der zu einer städtischen Sammlung und dann zu einem Stadtmuseum geführt hätte. Ohne den Verlust der wirtschaftlichen und politischen Machtposition hätte es in den Niederlanden keine Museen gegeben, mit deren Hilfe sie ihr 'Goldenes Zeitalter' museal pflegen und vorzeigen.
Ähnliches gilt für Naturmuseen. Sie spiegeln nicht nur die wachsende Naturbeherrschung durch Wissenschaft wieder, sondern auch deren spürbar werdende Zerstörung. Der durch Landflucht, Veränderung der Arbeitsweisen, soziale Umbrüche hervorgerufene Wandel dessen, was man 'das Land' nennen könnte, führte zu - vergeblichen - Versuchen, den spezifischen Hausfleiß, die handwerkliche Produktion ländlicher Bevölkerungen zu erhalten und zur Erweiterung der Musealisierung um volkskundliche und heimatkundliche Museen. Diese Liste ließe sich beliebig verlängern.
Daß in den Musealisierungsthesen ein solider Kern steckt, kann man an vielen zeitgenössischen Beispielen sehen, wo etwa die Erhaltung eines 'alten' Gebäudes oder einer mehr oder minder zufällig zusammengekommenen Sammlung zur Gründung von Museen führen. Ehe man sich von etwas trennt, sich selbst und dem Verfall überlässt oder durch etwas entschieden Neues ersetzt, beginnen jene offenbar tief verankerte Skrupel zu walten, die jede gegen 'das Alte' gerichtete Haltung wie mit einer Schuld kontaminieren.

"Um ethische Aspekte muß sich ein privater Sammler nicht kümmern"

Matthias Dusini wird immer subtiler.
Seine Ironie ist jetzt so fein, daß ein unbedarfter Leser wie ich, lange braucht um den Artikel über die Ausstellung der Afrika-Sammlung Heinz Stepic (Spitzenmanager bei Raiffeisen) im Bank Austria Kunstforum richtig zu verstehen. Wie richtig?
Wer auf Skepsis gegenüber der Privatisierung der Kultur(politik) erpicht ist, wird in dem Artikel schon was Kritisches entdecken, wer postkoloniale Theorie kennt, hats schon nimmer ganz so leicht. Aber wer wird auch mit museologischem Sperrfeuer auf das unbeschwerte Einkaufen in Afrika antworten wollen.
Ja, "geraubt und abgeluchst" wurden die "Kunstwerke" (Kunstwerke?), es gibt eine " oft kriminelle Provenienz" und eine Kritik auf den "westlichen Blick".
Muß ein Spitzenmanager einer internationalen Großbank sich um sowas kümmern?
"Um diese ethischen Aspekte muss sich ein privater Sammler nicht kümmern", meint Matthias Dusini im FALTER 35/11 (31.8.2011).
Das ist ironisch gemeint.
Die Terracotta-Skulpturen der Nok werden erwähnt, Objekte einer der ältesten afrikanischen Kultur, die jetzt die "Archäologen ... verhökern".
Ich glaube mitbekommen zu haben, daß Nok-Objekte ausschließlich aus Raubgrabungen stammen, womit auch lange Zeit keinerlei 'archäologische', heißt wissenschaftliche Grabung und Dokumentation stattfindet und viel Information und Wissen unwiderruflich verloren ist. Erst seit einigen Jahren hat eine deutsche Universität mit Forschungen begonnen.
Gibt es überhaupt so etwas wie Legalität beim Erwerb solcher Objekte?
Das Wiener Völkerkundemuseum hat es abgelehnt, diese Ausstellung zu machen. Vielleicht wegen seiner personellen und finanziellen Engpässe? Vielleicht auch aus anderen Gründen.

Johann Georg Krünitz: Oeconomische Encyclopädie, oder allgemeines System der Land- Haus- und Staats-Wirthschaft, in alphabetischer Ordnung

Museum, das, aus dem Griech. μουσειον bedeutet 1) einen Tempel der Musen. 2) Eine Sammlung von Kunstwerken, öfters auch von Büchern und Naturproducten. 3) Einen Ort, wo man zusammen kommt, um sich mit den Wissenschaften und schönen Künsten zu beschäftigen, daher auch ein Studirzimmer oft ein Museum genannt wird; Mit den Museen in der 2ten und dritten Bedeutung dieses Wortes werden wir es hier vorzüglich zu thun haben, da man jetzt an mehreren Orten dergleichen Anstalten findet.
In so fern man unter Museum eine Sammlung von Kunstwerken versteht, ist es mit Kunstkammer, Kunst=Cabinet, Kunstsammlung zwar mehrentheils als gleichbedeutend zu nehmen, wovon ein eigner Artikel im 55sten Theile dieses Werkes vorkommt. In manchen Fällen schließt das Wort Museum indessen die Kunstsammlungen nur als einen Theil in sich, und in  so fern muß ich mich hier noch besonders damit beschäftigen, vorzüglich auch, da es einige jetzt so weltberühmte Museen gibt, die in jenem Artikel nicht angeführt oder doch nicht beschrieben sind, und die ich nicht übergehen kann. Dahin gehört vor allen Dingen
 I. Das Museum Napoleon zu Paris,
welches vor einigen Jahren noch das Kunstmuseum, Musée des Arts heiß, und im Louvre befindlich ist, und jetzt eine solche Anzahl von Kunstwerken der alten und neuen Zeit enthält, wie man nirgends auf der Erde an einem Orte beysammen findet. Man rechnet nähmlich, nachdem darin alle vor der Revolution zerstreuete öffentliche Kunstwerke zusammen gebracht, und diese durch die in andern Ländern eroberten vermehrt sind, 1390 Gemählde fremder Schulen, 270 aus der alten französischen, und über 1000 aus der neuen französischen Schule; 20,000 Zeichnungen aus verschiedenen Schulen, 4000 Kupferplatten, und 30,000 Kupferstiche, über 150 antike Statuen und eine Menge hetrurischer Vasen, Porphyrtafeln etc. Die bis jetzt dem Publicum geöffnete Gallerie faßt nicht die Hälfte der Kunstwerke, welche die französische Nation besitzt; über 1000 Gemählde stehen zu Versailles und 6 -- 700 im Louvre. Aus diesen letzteren soll eine Commission 15 Gemähldesammlungen auswählen, die in Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasburg, Brüssel, Marseille, Rouen, Dijon, Nantes, Toulouse Genf, Caen, Lille, Maynz, Rennes, und Nancy aufgestellt werden sollen.

Warum mein Buch "Die Pyramide des Louvre" nicht (noch nicht) erscheint

So eine Schreibkrise - noch dazu über einem gewissermaßen fertigen Manuskript - hatte ich noch nie, und keine, bei der mir die Gründe für das Stocken der Arbeit dermaßen unklar ist. Der Text war schon mehrmals 'fertig', als Redemanuskript, als überarbeitetes Redemanuskript, als - publizierter - Aufsatz. Und man könnte wohl auch den Stand, den der Text jetzt hat, drucken lassen.
Aber.
Ich hatte nicht nur nie eine derartige Schreibkrise, ich hatte auch noch nie ein Thema, das wie der Magnetberg in der Sage, immer neue Aspekte, Fragen, Informationen, Aspekte, Probleme anzieht.
Hier ein Beispiel, ein winziger Splitter nur, aber vielleicht kann der als Ausrede herhalten.


Der von Staatspräsident Mitterand (ohne Wettbewerb) mit der Planung der Erweiterung des Louvre beauftragte Architekt I.M.Pei hat immer bestritten, daß ihm bei der Wahl der Pyramide das Vorbild des ägyptischen Totenkultbaues vor Augen stand. Diese Skizze jedenfalls zeigt für den (metaphorischen) klassizistischen Grabbau typische Beispiele. Einmal Etienne Louis Boullée megalomane Phantasmagorie eines sich aus der Erde gleichsam erhebenden, gleichwohl schwer lastenden, massiven Bau mit flachen Neigungswinkel der Pyramide und oberhalb eine der Lösungen für das Problem des Einganges, für das ja das altägyptische Bauwerk kein Beispiel geben konnte. So knüpfen diese Skizzen nicht nur an die Tradition der Pyramide als Grabbau an (etwas was von den Zeitgenossen des Louvre-Ausbaues heftig kritisiert wurde - das Museum ein Grabmal! - ungeachtet der postmodernen Verkehrung so gut wie aller Eigenschaften der ägyptischen Pyramide), sondern zeigt, daß auch andere Lösungen für den zentralen Eingang zumindest skizzenhaft erprobt wurden. Das ausgeführte Portal Peis liegt bündig in der geneigten gläsernen Front und ist, wenn es geöffnet ist, nicht besonders elegant. Abgesehen davon, daß dieser Eingang, wegen der schmalen Rolltreppe und der Besucherkontrolle, der unpraktischeste aller Louvreeingänge ist und regelmäßig zur Bildung langer Warteschlangen führt.
Das war das kleine Beispiel, das zeigt, warum ich nicht und nicht fertig werden will, mit dem 'Louvre-Buch'. Aber es wird schon noch... Sicher!
