Occupy Museum - Protestaktionen am Guggenheim Museum New York

Am 22. 2. ist es im Guggenheimmuseum in New York zu eider aufsehenerregenden Protestaktion gekommen. "Over 40 protesters staged an intervention inside the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan during Saturday night’s pay-what-you-wish admission hours. Unfurling mylar banners, dropping leaflets, chanting words, handing out information to museum visitors, and drawing attention with the use of a baritone bugle, the group worked to highlight the labor conditions on Saadiyat Island in the United Arab Emirates, where Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, a franchise of New York’s Guggenheim, is being built." Die Aktion, die unter anderem von Occupy Museum (hier zur Webseite) und Gulf (hier zur Webseite) unterstützt wurde, und von Künstlern und Wissenschaftern (u.a. der New York University) unterstützt wird, richtet sich gegen die Expansionspolitik von Guggenheim mit Schwerpunkt auf einer Kritik der Arbeitsbedingungen bei der Errichtung der Gebäude und generell dem ökonomischen Kontext dieser Politik.
Etwa ein Monat später kam es zu einem weiteren Protest: "Protesters dropped thousands of pieces of paper from the Guggenheim rotunda this weekend. Hyperallergic reports that 9,000 "1 percent" bills of a satirical currency rained down on visitors Saturday evening in an act to draw attention to the Guggenheim's alleged use of "slave labor" to build a satellite site in Abu Dhabi."
